For knowledge of mental health we mean raising awareness among citizens as a whole through information initiatives and cultural in-depth study on the topic of mental distress, based on the principles of knowledge, protection of rights and solidarity for fight stigma, or negative prejudice towards those suffering from mental distress.
Mental disorders, including depression, anxiety disorders, anorexia and bulimia nervosa, substance and alcohol abuse disorders, they strike transversally, without distinctions of age group or socioeconomic level. According to the WHO - World Health Organization - there are approximately 450 million people worldwide who suffer from neurological, mental and behavioral disorders. According to reported data (WHO, 2020), from 2007 to 2017 there was a estimated worsening of 13% of mental health conditions and substance use disorders. As for the younger ones, the data shows that 10-20% adolescents around the world experience psychological distress.
This also implies a substantial economic impact: the WHO estimates that depression and anxiety – the two most common mental health conditions – cost the global economy 1 trillion dollars a year.
The living conditions of people suffering from mental distress and their families can be made even more difficult by loneliness, from the lack of a solidarity network and give it stigma which still too often surrounds mental distress.
